Garden Gate Delivery is a grocery delivery service offering a variety of fresh, local foods to the greater Ithaca, NY area.
Garden Gate is owned and run by me, Marlo Capoccia, my husband Fred, and my three kids who help in various ways, like going to bed on time. It is a small company with a big vision for becoming part of a sustainable local economy with products as fine as those you'd find in a store with goods from around the world.
Several years ago I realized that the foods we had within 100 miles of Ithaca were usually better than those I was buying in the grocery store, but they had a huge advantage: they were right here. The problem was that there was no one place to get them all easily. Rather than open a new store and duplicate the great work already being done by stores with local products, I decided to pick and choose the products that I would want to feed my own family and bring them directly to your door.
Ultimately Garden Gate isn't really just me and my exceedingly well-behaved boys. Garden Gate is a connection to the farms and processors of New York State. I am happy to consider myself an attendant to the need of farms to reach their customers and to the need of customers to have healthy, clean, and delicious food to eat.
Where Our Food Comes From
All of Garden Gate’s food comes from farms and processors in New York State or within 100 miles of Ithaca. We do this for a number of reasons, but the simplest reason is that the food tastes better and is better for you than food that has been trucked across the country on dirty highways. Another reason we buy only regional food is that supporting local farms is food security. Whenever your food dollars are spent locally, you are helping maintain farmland. As farmland is scooped up by developers, more houses and housing developments are built, our population rises, but the farmland feeding them decreases. It’s not hard math to see why keeping farmers around is important to all of us.
